Nursing and midwifery

We are proud to care for our patients, who are the most important people in our hospital.  Our goal is to become one of the top University Teaching Hospitals in the UK by 2025.  To do this, we aim to consistently improve patient care and foster innovation.

Our nurses and midwives are crucial to the success of patient services. Nursing and midwifery staff are the people who deliver care day in, day out. At UHNM we know that there is a direct link between the quality of patient care and the education and training of staff. We want to deliver the very best outcomes for our patients, so we have put personal and professional development at the top of our agenda. That's why we encourage post-graduate study and research and have two Professors in Nursing.

Training to be a nurse or midwife

We provide high quality placement for children's and adult nursing and midwifery students from Keele and Staffordshire Universities and actively support elective placement requests.  Students spend 50% of their training within the clinical area and UHNM is able to provide this.

We have a nursing and midwifery strategy 2016-18 and strive to consistently and constantly improve patient care and foster innovation in an organization which exceeds the expectations of patients.  We offer an attractive place to work, learn and research because we focus on excellence in everything we do.

UHNM prides itself on providing excellence in education and training and we are committed to developing a healthcare workforce of the highest quality.  Our partner Higher Education Institutes are Keele University and Staffordshire University.  Offering placements across the acute trust, UHNM has many award winning teams which include our Frailty, Stroke, Cardiology, Trauma, Children's and Midwifery teams.

As well as supporting non-practicing nurses to return to nursing, we provide all qualified nurses with a highly supportive induction, including study days and preceptorship portfolio.

Training to be a Nursing Assistant

There are various options for the Nursing Assistant workforce, including the Care Certificate and bespoke clinical competencies within the clinical field of practice along with generic competencies.  Ongoing development is encouraged with many in-house programmes which are run by our Care Coach Team and The Academy.

We support clinical divisions with the development of staff undertaking:

  • Functional Skills English/Maths

  • NVQ II

  • NVQ III

  • Higher Apprenticeship Foundation Degree in Acute Care or Integrated Care​
