Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Royal Stoke University Hospital is a busy and dedicated Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, caring for around 600 babies each year from Stoke, Staffordshire, the wider West Midlands Network and beyond.

With 26 cots across intensive care, high dependency and special care, plus a 10‑bedded Transitional Care Unit and a Neonatal Community Outreach Team, we support babies from 22 weeks’ gestation onwards.

Our team attends deliveries, stabilises and transfers newborns, and provides high‑quality, individualised care throughout every stage of a baby’s neonatal journey.

Family is at the centre of everything we do. We recognise that admission to NICU is often unexpected and can be overwhelming, so we work closely with parents to ensure they feel supported, informed and involved.

Through our Family Integrated Care model, open visiting policy, and facilities including six family rooms and cot‑side sleeping spaces, we help families stay close to their baby.

Our collaborative, multi‑disciplinary team is committed to delivering excellent care, supporting research, and guiding families with compassion, whether their stay is a few hours, many months, or part of end‑of‑life care.

Bliss

Bliss is a UK-based charity that exists to give every baby born premature or sick in the United Kingdom the best possible chance of survival and quality of life by supporting families, campaigning for better neonatal care, helping healthcare professionals, and funding research.

Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP)

The MNVP is made up of parents, families, NHS staff and other stakeholders that listens to the experiences of women, birthing people and their families to help plan, review and improve local maternity and neonatal care services. MNVPs bring service user voices into decision-making and work collaboratively with the NHS to make care safer and better.

Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS)

The LMNS is a partnership of local NHS maternity and neonatal service providers, commissioners, health professionals, service users (including people from MNVPs), local authorities and others that works together to plan, improve and oversee maternity and newborn care so that services are safer, more personalised, equitable, and responsive to local needs. The LMNS develops and implements a locally-owned plan for improving maternal and neonatal services, bringing everyone together to learn from feedback, improve quality and safety, and deliver national priorities in the local area.

UHNM Charity

UHNM Charity is the official charity for University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM), which supports the Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent and County Hospital in Stafford. It exists to raise and provide additional funds beyond what the NHS budget covers so the Trust can buy state-of-the-art equipment, fund lifesaving research, enhance patient comfort and experience, support staff training, and create welcoming spaces and services for patients and families. Donations and fundraising help improve care, fund specialist equipment, and back projects that make hospital life better for people of all ages
