UHNM stroke and neuroscience research recognised on international stage

Research at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) has received international recognition after three projects were chosen to be presented at one of Europe’s leading stroke conferences.

The projects led by staff from UHNM’s Research and Innovation, Stroke and Neuroscience teams were presented at the European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2026.

The research explored different methods of feeding support for patients following stroke. 

They included a ward-based pilot project, a review comparing different feeding methods and research into whether ultrasound could be used at the bedside to confirm nasogastric tube placement.

Surabhi Saxena, senior research practitioner, said: “Having our work recognised at an international conference was a proud moment for the whole team.

“These projects came from challenges and questions we see in our day-to-day work caring for patients. Having the chance to present our findings on an international stage was a fantastic opportunity to share what we've learned and hear from others working in stroke care.

“The research has helped us identify areas where more work is needed and where there are still gaps in the evidence. It was also a great opportunity to work closely with colleagues from different specialties, whose knowledge and support played a huge part in the success of the projects.”

The team's work has also gained national recognition, with a related project recently published in Nursing Times. Further findings from the team will also be presented at the UK Stroke Forum later this year.

Surabhi added: “I've learned a lot from colleagues at UHNM including nursing and AHPs and from professionals at other organisations, and those conversations have given us new ideas for future research and patient care. It has been a really rewarding experience and we're looking forward to building on this work.”
