UHNM nurse wins national bowel cancer award

A nurse at University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) has won a national award for her work caring for and supporting people with bowel cancer.

Dorothy Munyanyi, lead colorectal clinical nurse specialist at UHNM took home the ‘colleague-nominated’ award at Bowel Cancer UK’s Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards.

She was nominated by her team for her clinical leadership and work to improve colorectal cancer care, including developing a nurse-led follow-up pathway to ensure patients needing high-risk surveillance receive timely monitoring and any potential concerns are identified early.

Dorothy said: “I feel incredibly proud and honoured to receive this award. I am privileged to work with an excellent multidisciplinary team at UHNM so I see this recognition as a reflection of our shared commitment to providing compassionate care for our patients.

“Supporting people through their cancer diagnosis, treatment and follow-up is at the heart of what we do and I’m passionate about making sure patients feel informed and supported throughout their care.

“I’m very grateful to my colleagues who nominated me and to everyone who continues to support and believe in me. It makes receiving this award particularly special.”

Dorothy also led the development of colorectal cancer patient information at UHNM, working with patients and colleagues to create written and visual resources to help people better understand their diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care.

In her nomination Dororthy’s colleagues highlighted the support she provides to other members of the team, with judges praising her “clinical leadership, innovation and commitment to developing others” and her contribution to improving care for patients.

The Gary Logue Awards awards recognise colorectal cancer nurses from across the UK who make a significant impact on people affected by bowel cancer.

As part of the award, Dorothy received a £300 bursary which can be used to help further improve care and support for UHNM patients.
