UHNM Chief Executive Award: Dr Antony George

A specialist doctor from University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) has received recognition for his compassionate patient care, leadership and commitment to supporting colleagues.

Dr Antony George, specialist doctor in endocrinology, diabetes and general internal medicine, has received the Chief Executive Award after being nominated by Professor Indira Natarajan, consultant stroke physician.

The award also recognises Dr George’s efforts to improve patient flow through safe and timely discharges across some of UHNM’s busiest medical wards.

Professor Natarajan said: “I was delighted to nominate Dr George for the Chief Executive Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership, compassionate patient care, resilience and unwavering commitment to both patients and colleagues.

“Dr George consistently demonstrates exceptional professionalism and dedication while working within the General Internal Medicine wards, often in highly pressured and demanding clinical environments. He approaches every challenge with calmness, integrity and remarkable resilience, ensuring that patients receive safe, timely and compassionate care irrespective of workload pressures or operational difficulties.

“One of Dr George’s greatest strengths is his deeply compassionate approach towards patients and their families. He treats every patient with dignity, empathy and kindness, taking time to listen carefully to their concerns and involving them meaningfully in decisions regarding their care. His ability to provide reassurance and maintain humanity in complex clinical situations has earned him immense respect and appreciation from both patients and staff alike.

“Dr George is also an exemplary leader who leads by example through his work ethic, professionalism and collaborative attitude. He is highly regarded by resident doctors for the guidance, encouragement and mentorship he provides on a daily basis. He actively supports their clinical development, career progression and wellbeing, creating an environment where junior colleagues feel valued, supported and empowered to grow professionally. His approachable nature and willingness to teach have had a lasting positive impact on many trainees working alongside him.

“In addition, Dr George has fostered an excellent collaborative relationship with the nursing teams and multidisciplinary colleagues across the wards. He promotes open communication, mutual respect and teamwork, helping to create a cohesive and supportive working environment. His collaborative approach has greatly contributed to improving seamless patient flow and enhancing the overall patient journey through the hospital.

“Dr George’s sustained commitment to excellence, leadership under pressure and genuine compassion embody the core values of the organisation.”

Dr Ananth Nayak, consultant physician in diabetes & endocrinology and clinical director for general medicine, supported the nomination saying:  “I was pleased to support Dr George’s nomination for a Chief Executive Award, he is one of the most effective and dependable senior physicians on our medical wards, making a significant contribution to patient flow through safe and timely discharges.

“Dr George consistently goes above and beyond for patients and colleagues, often taking on additional work to help patients leave hospital as soon as they are ready. It has also been a privilege to see his progression at UHNM from resident doctor to a highly respected senior physician, reflecting both his personal commitment and the contribution he continues to make to the Trust.”

Reflecting on receiving the award, Dr George said: “I am honoured to have been nominated for this award and extremely grateful for the recognition. Reading the testimonial, I realise that my colleagues who have nominated me have noticed things about me that I was not aware of.

“Any work deserving recognition would not have been possible without the supervision and training I have received at UHNM over the last 12 years. The work I have been doing would not have been possible if I had not been part of this cohesive and supportive team that feels more like a family.

“Once again I feel happy and honoured to be part of an organisation that recognises and rewards its employees.”
