This leaflet will provide you with information about DrEaMing which means Drinking, Eating and Moving within 24 hours of your surgery.

What is ‘DrEaMing?
DrEaMing is as an NHS plan for patients which, if followed, will have positive results to help you recover quickly from your operation.
It will also avoid complications that may keep you in hospital longer than is necessary.
Benefits of DrEaMing
The benefits of this plan include:
- Your wound healing much quicker and therefore giving you a better recovery.
- A reduced stay in hospital.
- Enable you to return to normal activities more quickly.
- Reduced risk of complications following your surgery.
DrEaMing Team
Depending on your operation a decision will be made by one of the healthcare team as to how long you may need to stay in hospital. Some of the staff you will see in addition to the ward nurses and doctors caring for you may include:
- Pain team
Their role is to assess any pain you may have and advise you on pain medication and how it can help you after your surgery.
- Physiotherapists
Support will be provided after your surgery to help you move within your limits.
- Dieticians
They will provide advice on your nutritional needs after surgery.
- Specialist nurses
Depending on your surgery, you may be visited by one of these nurses.
After Surgery
You will be offered sips of fluid or a drink in the recovery area or as soon as you are back on the ward.
You will be offered food in the first 24 hours if your surgeons are happy for you to eat.
You will be encouraged to get out of bed as soon as possible and get into a chair. If you need assistance the staff will help you.
