Automated Chemistry
Routine biochemistry testing across our hospital network is performed using a variety of automated chemistry analysers, supplied by different manufacturers depending on the site. Some laboratories, such as at Royal Stoke Hospital and Leighton, utilise a track-based system where samples are loaded onto a conveyor belt. Each sample’s unique barcode is scanned at regular intervals, guiding it to the most appropriate analyser for processing. Other sites without a track system manually load samples directly onto the analysers.
Automation enables many routine tests to be completed with minimal human intervention, increasing the speed and capacity of analysis while maintaining high accuracy. Once testing is complete, samples are typically stored in refrigerated modules for at least 48 hours, where available.
Biomedical Scientists staff all automated chemistry sections, ensuring equipment is functioning correctly, performing calibration and quality control throughout the day, and reviewing results for technical accuracy.
Operating hours vary by site—please refer to the Biochemistry Department page for specific information. Urgent tests are prioritised at all locations, though routine tests may have longer turnaround times outside core hours.
Common routine tests performed across the network include:
• Electrolytes
• Renal function tests
• Liver function tests
• Cardiac markers
• Bone profile
• Haematinics
• Glucose
• Hormone profiles
