Mr Lynval D Jones MBBS, FRCOphth, PGA (Med Ed.), MMedSc (disc.)

Consultant glaucoma and cataract specialist
I am a dedicated ophthalmologist specialising in general ophthalmology and glaucoma. After earning my Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) from the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (UK) in November 2007, I pursued advanced subspecialty training and fellowship in complex surgical glaucoma management at the Birmingham and Midlands Eye Centre. As a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), I have committed my career to advancing patient care through expertise in both medical and surgical glaucoma management.
Since July 2009, I have served as a glaucoma consultant at the University Hospital North Midlands, specialising in the management of glaucoma and cataracts. My clinical practice includes comprehensive care for glaucoma, encompassing medical management, Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), and surgical interventions such as trabeculectomy for advanced cases, combined cataract-glaucoma procedures, including phaco-trabeculectomy, phaco-canaloplasty with trabeculotomy, phaco-goniosynechialysis, Preserflo microshunt insertion and cyclodiode laser treatment. I also provide specialised treatments for narrow-angle glaucoma, including YAG laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) and Argon Laser Peripheral Iridoplasty (ALPI). Additionally, I manage complex cataracts associated with acute and chronic glaucoma
I am an advocate of collaborative care in ophthalmology and have worked with the local optical committee (LOC) and local optometrists since 2009 to provide training and governance of glaucoma shared- care in North Staffordshire. This is done through clinical placements supported by the trust and a managed glaucoma clinical network (MCN) of regional glaucoma consultants and optometrists.
Alongside my clinical roles, I hold a postgraduate award in medical education from the University of Warwick and a master’s degree with distinction in medical sciences from the University of Wolverhampton. These achievements have enabled me to contribute significantly to education and quality assurance in ophthalmology. I served as the college tutor representative for six years at the University Hospitals North Midlands and currently hold the position of QA lead for Health Education England in the West Midlands.
