Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer

Meet the Team

The Oesophago-gastric (OG) cancer team at University Hospital North Midlands cares for patients undergoing investigation or having treatment for Oesophageal or Stomach cancer. The team work across both The Royal Stoke site and County. However, due to the specialist care required, most investigations and treatments such as surgery or radiotherapy are based at The Royal Stoke.

Our OG cancer team includes several specialists including nurses, surgeons, oncologists, gastroenterologists, histopathologists, radiologists as well as several others.

We are a specialist centre for Oesophageal and Gastric cancer surgery. The team offers specialist services to patients from Staffordshire, Shropshire and Telford, Mid Cheshire and Wolverhampton.

The Specialist team (multi-disciplinary team - MDT) and service are led by consultant surgeons Mr George Bouras and Mr Vamshi Jagadesham.

A holistic needs assessment (HNA) is an assessment and discussion you
may have with someone from your healthcare team. Together, you talk
through your needs and concerns. You then agree on a plan for your
care and support needs.

It is called holistic because you can discuss any needs or concerns
you have about any area of your life. It is not only about the physical
symptoms of cancer or the side effects of treatment. These concerns
can be physical, emotional, practical, financial, spiritual.

Included in your patient pack (given to you at your first appointment
with the Nurse Specialist team) is a HNA booklet and checklist which
describes a HNA in more detail.

If you would like to talk to someone about a HNA, please call your
nurse specialist or cancer navigator.

You may be able to claim benefits to help you in your situation.

You may also be able to get financial assistance from other organisations.

After a cancer diagnosis, many people find making the decision to
follow a healthy and balanced diet can help through treatment and
help improve symptoms.

It can also help you feel that you are doing the best for your health.
As part of your treatment you may be referred to a dietitian at the
hospital.

There is information on keeping active which is available online or
through the Macmillan information centre and your specialist nurse.
