Dermatology
The department has one Consultant Dermatologist, one Associate Specialist and a number of general nurses. The dermatology clinic caters for adults and children and covers all aspects of dermatology including dermatological surgery . We have a dedicated multi-disciplinary team who work closely with radiotherapy and plastics teams to provide comprehensive cancer treatment reviews.
Outpatient consultations for the assessment of the full range of dermatological conditions are available and include skin cancers, premalignant and benign tumours, inflammatory dermatoses, ulcers, vascular malformations / haemangiomas, infections / infestations, pigmentary disorders, hair and nail diseases, genodermatoses and cutaneous manifestations of internal disease.

Our aim is to offer a one-stop service for the majority of our patients where surgery is performed on the day of the clinic appointment. This means fewer visits to the department and reduces waiting times for the first definite treatment. In a small number of cases patients have the choice to be placed onto a waiting list. We also offer a maximum two week wait from your GP's referral to your consultation with the dermatologist where there is a suspected skin cancer such as squamous cell carcinoma or malignant melanoma.
We offer the latest technology in ultra-violet light therapy with narrow (TLO1) and broadband UVB and PUVA (Psoralen UVA) to treat a number of conditions such as Psoriasis, Mycosis Fungoides, Polymorphic Light Eruption and Vitiligo. Depending on the skin condition, the course of treatment could last from six weeks to four months with a regular attendance of two to three times a week.
Patch testing is a test used to determine the causes of contact dermatitis. This test involves the application of allergens to the patient's skin. The results are monitored closely and patients are required to attend the clinic three times during the week.
It is very useful to the dermatologists if you bring a list of all your medications, including tablets, syrups, inhalers and any creams or ointments that you may be putting on to your skin.
