Blood tests

Your GP or hospital outpatients' clinic may complete a request card for a blood test. This involves attending a phlebotomy (blood tests) clinic so that a sample of your blood can be sent to the pathology laboratory for testing.  The Phlebotomist will call you into a room and ask you to sit in a chair and uncover your arm.  After confirming your identity, blood is taken from a vein in your arm and put into a special blood bottle.  Sometimes more than one blood bottle is filled depending on the type of blood test requested by your doctor, however, usually only one venepuncture is needed to collect sufficient blood for the tests. 

Blood tests during COVID-19

All clinics are currently appointment only

Please attend alone with the only exception being essential carers

Please attend as close to your appointment time as possible to support social distancing

Please do not attend if you have:

  • a new continuous cough
  • a high temperature
  • a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of smell or taste (anosmia)

If you have any of the above symptoms please re book no sooner than 10 days from when they started.

You will not be seen without a paper blood test request from your doctor

Book your Phlebotomy appointment

Booking your blood test

If you are 10 years old or over, you can book an appointment  at a UHNM community clinic held at various locations throughout the city.

  • Please attend alone where possible, with the exception of essential carers
  • Please do not arrive early for your appointment as you may not be allowed into the building
  • Do not attend if you have any symptoms of Covid-19
  • You must have a printed request form from your GP/hospital doctor
  • Do not attend without an appointment as you will not be seen
