UHNM senior staff nurse returns to Indian college to inspire next generation of nurses
A senior staff nurse from University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) has returned to his former college in India to share his career journey and highlight the opportunities available for international nurses in the NHS.
Hashim Asad, who works as a senior clinical staff nurse on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, was invited as a guest speaker at the International Conference on Globalisation in Nursing, hosted by Sivagiri Sree Narayana Medical Mission College of Nursing in Kerala.
Hashim delivered a session called ‘Gateway to Dream Destination in Nursing’, which gave an insight into UK nursing careers and the professional development support available at UHNM.
The event brought together students, academics and international speakers to explore global trends in nursing practice and development.
Hashim said: “It was incredibly emotional to return to my old college where my journey first began. Standing before the next generation of nurses, this time representing UHNM, was a very proud moment for me.
“I shared with the students how UHNM played a huge role in shaping who I am as a professional. From my clinical experiences in AMU to the continued professional development (CPD) and leadership programmes I’ve completed, everything has helped build my confidence, my skills and my passion for high-quality patient care. I also shared how strongly UHNM lives its values every day.”
During his talk Hashim explained the UK nursing career pathway and how nurses can progress to advanced practice roles. He also spoke about the opportunities available to international nurses at UHNM, including leadership development, extended clinical roles, and involvement in research, education and digital innovation, as well as UHNM’s strong university partnerships to support training.
He said: “I said that UHNM is incredibly welcoming, and from the moment you arrive there is support at every step. Whether it’s Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) preparation, Trust induction, its mentorship programme or ongoing career development it invests a lot in helping international nurses succeed.”
“For me, this was about giving back to the place where my journey started and showing students that UHNM is a truly inclusive and progressive employer.”
