UHNM’s Deputy Director of Infection Prevention Receives National Praise

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust’s (UHNM) Deputy Director of Infection Prevention has received national recognition for his effective management of a recent infection outbreak.

Following UHNM’s response to the April outbreak, Emyr Phillips received special commendation from NHS England and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for his leadership.

Emyr was also honoured by Dr Simon Constable, presenting him with the UHNM Chief Executive Award.

Dr Constable said: “I was delighted to surprise Emyr for all his expertise and diligence that went into managing the outbreak back in April. NHS England and UKHSA had given us special recognition for the way this was managed, so it was only fitting I followed their lead.

“My award also recognises Emyr’s exceptional commitment and leadership during what was an extremely challenging winter period for UHNM. His consistent and reassuring presence was invaluable as we navigated the pressures of the season. The dedication of our infection prevention teams, under his guidance, played a critical role in supporting safe clinical decision-making and maintaining patient flow, helping us to avoid potentially greater challenges.”

Following the presentation, Emyr said: “I’ve been at UHNM for 16 years and last winter was the worst for viral infections that we’ve had in a long time. We overcame this through teamwork, working with the hospital site managers to make sure that we kept patient flow going.

“I’m shocked to receive this award. I’m just doing what I’m paid to do which is to protect our patients. On my first day in this post, the chief executive at the time told me my job was to protect our patients 24 hours a day, and that’s always stuck with me.”

Emyr and Dr Constable were joined by Ann-Marie Riley, chief nurse, for the presentation.
