UHNM Radiographer wins Midlands Radiographer of the Year award

A radiographer from University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) has been named Midlands Radiographer of the Year.

Natalina Milazzo, radiotherapy radiographer and advanced practitioner in skin, was recognised by the Society of Radiographers (SoR) during their annual awards ceremony in London.

Natalina received the award in recognition of her role in developing internal eye shields for use in UHNM’s Radiotherapy Department.

Carolyn O’Donovan, radiotherapy service manager who nominated Natalina for the award, said: “When the only supplier of protective lead in-eye shields stopped production, Natalina worked closely with UHNM’s radiotherapy technicians, engineers and Research and Innovation (R&I) department to design and produce a safe, effective alternative for patients receiving treatment for skin cancers around the eye.

“The eye shields are now in clinical use at UHNM and fully traceable throughout manufacture and patient treatment. Importantly, they are also recyclable, reducing lead waste and supporting the department’s commitment to sustainable, environmentally conscious clinical practice.

“I am very proud of what Natalina has achieved and that she has been recognised for her work in the UHNM Radiotherapy Department and her commitment to improving care for patients.”

Natalina said: “The awards evening was very grand, with radiographers from around the UK gathering to celebrate each other’s achievements. It was the first year the SoR announced the winners live, which added even more surprise and excitement.

“It was a surprise to be nominated and the win was a shock, especially after hearing the incredible success stories from the other nominees. I am very proud and honoured to accept the award. It is lovely to be acknowledged for the work we do to improve our service for patients.

“But none of this could have been achieved without the amazing team of radiographers, technicians and physics colleagues who collaborated to get the project up and running. There was a lot of teamwork and support throughout. The success of the project is that we are now treating patients using our own medical device.”

The award marks the second time UHNM’s Radiotherapy team has won the Midlands Radiographer of the Year title, following success in 2022 for pioneering work in developing a paperless department.
