UHNM Launches Low Carbon Care Framework

UHNM Net Zero Clinical Lead Dr Andrew Bennett and Deputy Chief Nurse Fiona Hibberts, have worked closely with the Sustainability Team to develop the Low Carbon Care Framework which is designed for both clinical and non-clinical teams to work together to help make UHNM more sustainable.

UHNM has joined forces with Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK) - an independent charity formed by the National Union of Students – to deliver the Framework as part of its award-winning Green Impact programme. This provides sustainability learning, resources and recognition to embed positive practices across organisations. Green Impact is all about building communities of people learning from each other and working together to create lasting change.

Fiona said: “Our staff are at the heart of this, leading the way by embedding sustainability into everyday practice, supporting colleagues and inspiring wider change. Like many things in a large organisation, working together is key. Even very small actions, when taken together, can make a significant impact.”

The Low Carbon Care Framework offers a list of simple, achievable actions tailored to different work areas, which teams can complete together. Achievements will be recognised through bronze, silver and gold accreditation, as well as special awards for teams and individuals at an annual celebration event. Staff achievements will also be showcased throughout the year in case studies and communications.

Teams and individuals will be supported throughout their greener journey with Fiona and Andrew as clinical peers, while the Sustainability Team will guide staff through getting started, choosing the most impactful actions and working towards success.

Dr Bennett, UHNM’s Net Zero Clinical Lead, explained the importance of the new initiative and said “The Low Carbon Care Framework is about empowering every team to make environmentally friendly decisions in their day-to-day work, while still delivering the very best healthcare.

By making small but meaningful changes together, we can protect the environment while continuing to provide outstanding care for our patients.”

Jenny Branford, Sustainability Manager, said: “The Low Carbon Care Framework will be officially launched on Tuesday 16 September. We look forward to supporting our staff as they deliver positive change through innovation, teamwork and healthy competition helping us care for our patients and communities while protecting the environment for future generations.”
