University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) is working to enhance cancer screening awareness and training for primary care teams in Stoke-on-Trent.
Primary care teams in Stoke-on-Trent have been given the opportunity to attend the first of its kind cancer screening training session delivered by UHNM cancer screening services.
More than 40 healthcare professionals attended an event led by University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) on 30 April to learn about the NHS cancer screening programmes available to local communities. The training session aimed to promote collaboration across services to increase uptake and improve early cancer detection.
General practice staff, including GPs, practice nurses, and social prescribers, gained insight into how UHNM’s cancer screening services are working with local communities. Emphasis was placed on the importance of early diagnosis, which can lead to simpler and more effective cancer treatments.
The event also provided a platform for attendees to ask questions, raise concerns, and suggest new ways to work together—all of which were addressed by UHNM’s screening teams.
Angela Power UHNM Bowel Cancer Screening Programme Lead said: “Collaborative working is key to raising awareness of the NHS screening services, to share the patient pathways and for the Primary Care Network teams to have a better understanding of the screening processes. This will support in general practice and bring together individuals with different backgrounds and experiences and hopefully reduce health inequalities and barriers to screening.”
Matthew Missen UHNM Public Health Consultant, said: “Detecting cancer early through screening can save lives by identifying cancer before symptoms appear. This benefits people diagnosed through screening by reducing the amount of cancer treatment needed and make treatment more effective.”
He added “The excellent partnership working by a range of NHS professionals with Cancer Screening Services at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust is vital to local efforts to improve uptake of screening and address inequalities in cancer diagnosis we know exist.
Whether it is breast, cervical, bowel, or lung cancer screening, your participation is vital. It is a simple yet powerful step towards protecting your health. We urge all eligible people to participate in NHS Cancer Screening."
The training session underscored the strong partnership between UHNM and primary care teams in Stoke-on-Trent, emphasising the joint commitment to ensuring early diagnosis of cancer. By working together, the aim is to enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of NHS cancer screening programmes, ultimately improving outcomes for local communities.
