UHNM Cancer Screening Teams Unveil Two New State-of-the-Art Mobile Units

Patients across Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire can now access life-saving screening closer to home following the opening of two new cutting-edge mobile units.

The cancer screening units will significantly expand access to early detection services for both breast and lung cancer and were opened in ribbon -cutting ceremonies on Friday 6 June and Tuesday 10 June.
Both units are equipped with advanced imaging technology to deliver high-quality diagnostics in community settings—eliminating the need for patients to travel to into hospital.

Lung Cancer Screening is targeted at current and former smokers aged 55–74and the programme includes a risk assessment followed by a low-dose CT scan for high-risk individuals. Screenings will be held up until early July 2025, at the Co-operative Bank in Leek.  Leek residents aged 55 to 74 who are current or former smokers are strongly encouraged to attend their lung health check appointments.

The Breast Screening mobile unit, stationed at Affinity, Talke Pits, will operate until November 2025 with women aged between 50–70 being seen by appointment for routine screenings. Those over 70 years old may self-refer.

The mobile units are part of UHNM’s commitment to improving cancer outcomes by making screening services more convenient, accessible, and responsive to local needs.
