UHNM appoints Dr Di Adamson as new Chief Medical Officer
University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Di Adamson as its new Chief Medical Officer.
Dr Adamson brings a wealth of clinical and leadership experience to the role. She began her NHS career in nursing before joining Royal Stoke as part of the first cohort of clinical training at Keele University, through the Manchester–Keele Collaboration. She completed her postgraduate medical training across the West Midlands and in Wales, specialising in general and vascular surgery. Following an accident that led to a long-term disability, she transitioned to emergency medicine and major trauma—a field in which she has made a significant impact.
At UHNM, Dr Adamson has served as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Major Trauma, Clinical Lead for Emergency Medicine, and Divisional Medical Director for Women’s, Children’s and Clinical Support Services. Most recently, she has provided steady leadership as Interim Chief Medical Officer.
Her appointment follows a highly competitive national recruitment process, which attracted a strong field of candidates. The rigorous selection process included multiple stages of assessment and interviews, with input from a diverse stakeholder panel comprising representatives from across UHNM, NHS England, and the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board.
UHNM Chair Jackie Small said: “We are delighted to welcome Dr Adamson into the permanent Chief Medical Officer role. Her clinical expertise, inclusive leadership and focus on patient-centred care make her an outstanding choice. Di’s appointment reflects the values and aspirations of our Trust and the communities we serve.”
Dr Jessica Sokolov, Regional Medical Director for NHS England Midlands, said: “Dr Adamson’s appointment is a testament to her exceptional leadership and dedication to improving care. Her experience across clinical and strategic roles, and her ability to engage with staff and patients alike, will be invaluable as the NHS continues to strengthen integrated care across the region.”
UHNM Chief Executive Dr Simon Contable, said: “Dr Adamson’s focus on clinical leadership and amplifying the voices of patients, carers, staff, and our communities will be instrumental in shaping the future of UHNM as we continue to deliver compassionate, high-quality care.”
About her appointment, Dr Adamson said: “It is a huge honour to be appointed as Chief Medical Officer at UHNM. This organisation has been a central part of my professional journey, and I am deeply committed to supporting our teams to deliver the best possible care for our patients. I look forward to working with colleagues across the Trust and our wider system to build on our strengths and tackle the challenges ahead.”
