New Year, New You: UHNM Goes Smoke-Free from April 2026
University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) is encouraging patients, visitors and staff to make a positive start to 2026 by quitting smoking.
From 1 April 2026, UHNM will become completely smoke-free across all sites, including Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital in Stafford. This means smoking will not be permitted anywhere on Trust grounds, including car parks and outdoor areas.
Kimberly Perickathara, UHNM Tabacco Dependency Lead Nurse said: "We know quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. Our smoke-free commitment reflects our dedication to creating a healthier environment for everyone who uses our services. We’re here to support patients and staff every step of the way."
She added: “We want to inform all patients and visitors that smoking will no longer be allowed anywhere on Trust grounds from 1 April. If you choose to smoke, it must be done away from our buildings to help protect the well-being of everyone here.
"If a member of our staff sees someone smoking on-site, they may kindly ask that person to stop. We appreciate your understanding as we work together to create a healthier environment for patients, caregivers, visitors, and staff.”
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the UK, and by going smoke-free we’re creating safer, healthier spaces for everyone—protecting patients, visitors and staff from harmful second-hand smoke while giving people the support they need to quit and enjoy better health and wellbeing.
The Trust is working closely with local stop smoking services to provide advice, resources and support for anyone who wants to quit. Free support is available through NHS Stop Smoking Services, including nicotine replacement therapies and tailored plans to help individuals succeed.
