A patient co-ordinator from University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) has scooped a national award in recognition of her outstanding work towards her Senior Health Care Diploma.

A patient co-ordinator from University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) has scooped a national award in recognition of her outstanding work towards her Senior Health Care Diploma.

Kelly Smith, who has worked at UHNM for almost 20 years, was awarded ‘Ladder Apprenticeship Champion’ by the National Ladder Foundation which included an invite to Westminster to collect her award.

The Targeted Lung Health Check patient co-ordinator, said: “It was a shock to be nominated for the award. Attending Westminster was like being in a movie, absolutely stunning. The presentation and celebration was situated overlooking the Thames, it was amazing to be there.

“Right Honourable Robert Halfon MP who supports the national Ladder scheme presented the award and I met local MP’s from Staffordshire.”  

Kelly, 42, who was the main carer for a family member during her teenage years and left school with no qualifications added: “When I left school it was my dream to wear a [graduate] cloak and hat. I feel very lucky to have fulfilled that dream.”

Thanks to Kelly’s hard work and commitment to the apprenticeship programme, she has been invited to become an ambassador for all apprenticeships by Anthony Baines Assistant Director for Skills and Employability at Staffordshire County Council.

Janina Barnett, Programme Manager for the lung health checks said: “Kelly is the most kind and determined person. Throughout any element of her life she strives to be the best, delivering high quality patient care. She is every value that the Trust holds and more. This award is very well deserved by her and testament to her continued vision to strive and succeed.”
