The surgery division employs more than 2,000 staff with centralised outpatients and theatres facilities based at Royal Stoke University Hospital with a day case facility based at County Hospital.

There are 26 retained, refurbished and new theatres, eight large wards, one day surgery ward, Surgical Assessment Unit, ICU facilities and Out-Patient Department for Surgical Clinics and a Central Treatment Suite.

The division provides General and Specialised Surgery as well as Emergency Surgery, Theatres and Anaesthetics and Intensive Care.

At University Hospitals, we specialise in soft tissue surgery and treat a variety of congenital and acquired conditions. We have particular expertise in breast reconstruction, and head and neck and skin cancer services. We also have close working relations with the Orthopaedic department as we are a Major Trauma Centre.

There are more than 25 active operating theatres within the theatres directorate at UHNM that see more than 30,000 patients per year. They cover a multitude of specialties including General Surgery, Specialist Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Trauma, Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery.

The ‘Da Vinci Xi’ is the second surgical robot to be used at UHNM, making UHNM the only NHS Trust in the West Midlands to have two robots and the latest robotic technology. Together they will radically improve the treatment of urology, general surgery and gynaecology patients.

University Hospitals has one of the largest urology units in the West Midlands and offers a comprehensive range of urology services. It is a designated urology cancer centre and receives referrals from local and regional hospitals for specialist surgery.
