UHNM radiographer publishes book
A UHNM radiographer has become a published author after her revision notes were highlighted as an excellent tool for others to use.
Rosie Jones, an Advanced Practice Radiographer, works in the Emergency Department at Royal Stoke University Hospital and her “labour of love” was started more than two years ago as part of her studies for a post-graduate certificate.
With more than 200 illustrations all hand drawn by Rosie, the book, Interpreting Musculoskeletal Images: Anatomy, Pathology and Emergency Reporting, aims to enhance learning and understanding of both radiology and anatomy and the relationship between them. It also provides hands-on support to junior doctors, other emergency medicine personnel and practising radiographers for use in the clinical setting and is also ideal for students preparing for qualifying examinations in medicine and radiography.
Today Rosie, of Maybank, Newcastle-Under-Lyme, said: “I am a visual learner so I was doing a lot of the drawing anyway for my studies and it was suggested I should try and find a publisher and unbelievably to me, the first one I approached wanted it. I was thrilled but find it terrifying, I have been quite detached from being a published author but now I have a copy in my hands it all seems unreal.”
Rosie, 31, joined UHNM in 2014 as a radiographer and qualified as an advanced practice radiographer in 2021. She said: “It has been a labour of love and it has taken hundreds of hours to painstakingly digitally draw the illustrations but I was doing them anyway prior to getting a publisher. I am excited but nervous to see if people buy the book and find it useful.”
Dr Paul Hancock, Emergency Consultant, encouraged Rosie to seek a publisher and today said: “When I saw Rosie’s illustrations for the first time during her revision in 2019, I thought they were fabulous and would be really good aid for other clinicians so encouraged her to find a publisher and I am really pleased it has finally come to fruition and other people can enjoy and benefit from her efforts.”
The book has a focus on A&E and trauma x-rays and pathology, but also covers further topics such as arthropathies, other chronic conditions and bone lesions.
