Ward 109 staff shine

Two members of the same ward have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to patient care. Penny Crosbie, ward manager, and Wendy Boote, nursing assistant, both work on ward 109 at Royal Stoke.

They were each nominated by their colleagues for the Employee of the Month award.

Penny supported the wife of a patient at the end of their life, staying late and coming in to work early to spend time supporting them.

Trish O’Neill, palliative nurse practitioner, said: “Penny’s attention to detail in caring for this gentleman was heartwarming and demonstrates her true passion for providing the highest level of care for her patients and their families. The patient’s wife was having to travel on the bus to and from the hospital and Penny agreed to arrange some finance to help with the cost of a taxi to ease this burden at such a difficult time. Penny has shown her compassion and professionalism many times over the years I have known her and is an amazing role model for her staff.”

Wendy puts on games and events for patients, even providing prizes.

Katie O’Donoghue said: “Even through difficult times in her personal life, Wendy ensures that patients on the ward are her priority. Both patients and staff have commented on how dedicated she is and it shows that her enthusiasm does not go unnoticed. As well as supporting patients, she also regularly puts raffles together to raise funds for the ward. Wendy always has a smile on her face and manages to also put one on the patients face too! She is a ray of sunshine and we all value her immensely on the ward.”
