Play Specialist Emma thanked by parent for being a “shining light”

A parent has thanked Emma Biddulph, Play Specialist, for being a “shining light” and “a breath of fresh air”. Emma has been given the UHNM Hero award by the parent, who wished to remain anonymous, in recognition of the difference she makes to their family when they regularly visit the unit.

The nomination also said: “Emma always has a smile for children, parents and staff and nothing is too much trouble. She would happily help anyone and has time for parents when we just need a moment, she always manages to be there to pick me up. We need more Emmas in the world.”

Emma was presented with the award by Debra Meehan, Acting Director of Nursing Quality and Safety.

Debra said: “We often recognise clinical staff but this just shows that there are lots of people who  come together to make families’ experiences good. This award is very well deserved.”

Emma said: “It’s a real honour to receive the award. Being a play specialist you are part of the family, making a difference for the child who is poorly, possibly for any siblings at home and for mum and dad.

“We help to normalise the hospital admission, providing play for the children and something they are used to doing at home. We try to make their experience as nice and normal as we can, that’s where we come into our own.”
