Care from the heart for Covid patients

cardiology ward team

Patients with Covid-19 are being cared for by the team on Royal Stoke’s cardiology ward for the second time this year. The team on ward 221 initially became a Covid ward in March this year and then reverted back to Cardiology in June. In the last few weeks they have again been designated as a Covid ward.

The new ways of working have presented a considerable challenge to staff but they have given extraordinary support to patients and each other.

Kath Marks, Senior Sister on ward 221, said: “Staff have faced the considerable challenge of transferring from their normal specialty to something completely different. They have adapted amazingly to a new way of working and have remained positive throughout, always giving high quality care. I am so proud to work with such a hard working team. Not once have they been negative about the situation and the challenges we face and they give 100% every shift.”

The team have been given the Chief Executive’s Award in recognition of their hard work and dedication.

Tracy Bullock, Chief Executive, said: “The team have set a fantastic example here and I really admire their dedication and spirit. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to have to go from one specialty you’re very familiar and secure with to something completely different, but they have carried on admirably and clearly keep patient wellbeing at the centre of everything they do.”
