Anaesthetic Team
Anaesthetists are doctors who have received specialist training in anaesthesia. They will give you your anaesthetic and be responsible for your safety and wellbeing during your procedure. Before the procedure, your anaesthetist will discuss a number of things with you including:
the types of anaesthetic appropriate for the procedure you are having
- Any risks or side effects associated with different types of anaesthetic
- They will also plan your anaesthetic and pain control with you, taking into account any preferences you have for a particular type of anaesthetic
- You should ask your anaesthetist to clarify anything you are unsure about, and raise any queries you have. Your anaesthetist will carefully monitor you throughout your operation and will make sure you wake up comfortably afterwards. They may also help with any pain relief you might need following the procedure.
I have been a Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia & Critical Care at UHNM since December 2013. I have undertaken my postgraduate training in Northern Deanery, Newcastle upon Tyne. I gained Qualifications in (MBBS) Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and (FRCA) Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. My Special interests in clinical practice are Anaesthesia for complex cardiology procedures such as TAVI and Mitral valve clipping. Developing and improving patient care on Cardiothoracic Critical Care and the development of multi-disciplinary approaches in decision making to provide high quality patient care. From a Management and Medical Education & Training perspective I am the current Divisional Medical Director for Network Services, an Honorary Lecturer at Keele University Medical School, an Educational Supervisor for Anaesthetic trainees and a Trust Appraiser.

I Joined Royal Stoke in August 1995 initially as Senior Registrar then appointed as Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia in May 1996. I had worked in Birmingham and Sheffield as a trainee. I have held posts as Clinical lead in Cardiothoracic anaesthesia, and Clinical Governance. I was one of the original Anaesthetists involved in the introduction of the TAVI (keyhole aortic valve replacement) service 2009. In 2020 I became a Part time Consultant Anaesthetist with sessions in Thoracic and General anaesthesia. My main interests are management of difficult airways in general, thoracic and respiratory patients using high flow O2 device (THRIVE). I also enjoy teaching One Lung Ventilation, Ultrasound CVP line and Regional blocks.
Dr Bala Murali completed his Bachelor of Medicine-Bachelor of Surgery from Tanjore medical college in India in 1992. After doing anaesthetic training in Chennai, India, he joined the training programme at Stoke school of anaesthesia in 1996. Dr Murali completed his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery from Papworth hospital in 2002. He also trained at Birmingham children’s and Heartlands hospitals. He was appointed as a Consultant in cardiothoracic anaesthesia at the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary in 2003 which subsequently changed to UHNM.
Dr Murali obtained accreditation of the British Society of Echocardiography in transoesophageal echocardiogram and has completed his Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education. He also holds the Associate Fellowship of Intensive Care Medicine qualification. He is a clinical skills tutor at Keele medical school and is the co-lead for cardiac Intensive Care Unit. He is an educational supervisor for anaesthesia trainees and is a Trust appraiser. His interests include medical education, ICU and transthoracic echocardiogram.
