“We wanted something that shows a bit of dignity” – UHNM Chaplaincy put together winter care bags for local homeless thanks to kind donations

Homeless people receiving treatment at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) will receive a care bag this winter thanks to kind-hearted local people and businesses.

UHNM’s Chaplaincy team have put together a number of bags for those homeless receiving treatment at Royal Stoke and County hospitals.

The bags contain essential items for both men and women including toiletry and sanitary products, food and warm clothing.

Items have been donated by local businesses, members of UHNM staff and former patients.

Rev. Chris Wright, Head Chaplain at UHNM said: “The need for improved provisions for those who are homeless was recently raised at UHNM, and it was something we investigated wanting to provide immediate help that could provide an enhanced service.

“Whilst our A&E departments already provide a change of clothes for those attending who are homeless, UHNM also gets the homeless attending Chaplaincy on occasions who have received treatment at our hospitals or who are simply looking for a warm, safe space.

“As the weather turned colder we wanted to be able to provide these people with something that shows a bit of dignity and value should we require it.    

“The bags contain toiletries and sanitary products, simple foods such a cuppa soups and warm clothing including hats, scarves and a change of underwear. Working in partnership with local homeless organisations and charities, the bags also contain a leaflet containing help and support to those who are rough sleeping.

“This has only been made possible thanks to the kind donations of local businesses, our UHNM staff and volunteers and former patients.”
