Department of older adults, UHNM

Nomination:
Department of older adults, UHNM

Over the years and particularly last year, the department of older adults demonstrated exceptional team working in challenging situations by shared understanding and flexibility. During the height of Covid-19 pandemic, the team was responsible for looking after frail elderly patients with Covid-19 and were able to provide high quality care to patients (both Covid-19 positive and non-Covid-19) across seven wards at Royal Stoke. Rotas were developed to meet the demands, sometimes with personal sacrifices. The team worked together and continue to do so on a daily basis to help with challenges of increasing demands of emergency admission. The team has collaborated with acute and emergency care departments to identify and pull frail patients thus reducing ED wait time. When there was a need to relocate FEAU at short notice to accommodate another specialty, the team pulled together and made this happen.

The team is proud of its compassionate care and has received a number of verbal and written positive feed backs. During the pandemic 2 of our wards ( wards 78&79) decided to make mixed sex bays to look after patient couples with COVID in the same ward so that couples could be side by side. This was highly appreciated by patients and family and received local and national attention. One of our ward sisters received the Daisy award- first of its kind in our Trust for compassionate caring and another ward received chief exec award.
