Children's Emergency Department and Children's Assessment Unit

Nomination:
Children's Emergency Department and Children's Assessment Unit

This team started off as two seperate teams but to ensure patient safety joined forces to become one team which meant a lot of staff having to learn new skills and different ways of working. Not only did they achieve this without jeopardising patients, the unit has moved five times. Their original home became a COVID-19 adult area and after several moves, the team eventually turned an outpatient area into an assessment area. Whilst all this was happening the staff also helped support adult ICU when they were working to capacity.

When Children's Intensive Care Unit turned to work with adults again the staff stepped up to help support the wider child health team in supporting the adult services. Recently we have seen unprecedented numbers of children attend the Emergency Department and again the team have stepped up to ensure all patients receive the best care possible and this was often done with reduced staffing due to sickness or staff working overtime or picking up extra shifts to ensure colleague and patient safety.

We are often left in the shadows of Adult ED or CICU but I think it’s about time this team is recognised for how amazing it is and that no matter what is thrown to us we step up and face each challenge head on.
