UHNM Consultant awarded Honorary Professorship

A pioneering Consultant from University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) has been awarded an Honorary Professorship within the School of Medicine at Keele University.

Professor Fahmy Hanna Consultant in Endocrinology and Metabolism has been awarded Honorary Professor in Endocrinology and Metabolism after establishing his reputation and expertise on his work around Diabetes in high-risk groups and adrenal incidentaloma.

Dr Hanna plans to further expand these areas with further grant applications, collaborations and publications, strengthening the relationship with Keele University and Staffordshire University together with UHNM, encouraging more front-line clinicians to develop interest in Research and Innovation.

Professor Fahmy Hanna said: “This award is not only personal but it should also be recognition of all the colleagues from UHNM and Keele who have collaborated and supported me over the years. The R&I department, especially Dr Simon Lea, has been an instrumental partner throughout this journey.

“This title is to be dedicated to our patients who are the cornerstone of all that we aim to achieve. Finally, for a full-time, front-line clinician to be recognised this way provides hope for all colleagues in similar positions that the culture is changing under the leadership of our CEO Tracy Bullock and our Medical Director Dr Matthew Lewis who are very keen for more academic work to be part of our routine activities.”

Dr Simon Lea, who has supported Professor Hanna said: “This is a prestigious title and is awarded for years of nationally and internationally leading research, service developments and innovations in the fields of endocrinology and metabolism. Professor Hanna is an exceptional researcher who brings together clinical expertise and a passion for research – all for the benefit of patients. He has been Chief Investigator on numerous successful studies and this recognition from Keele University is very well justified.  I’m sure Prof Hanna will continue to develop further research applications for studies which will hopefully benefit many patients, both locally and nationally, maintaining his reputation as a research leader in his field.”

Professor Christian Mallen, Dean of the School of Medicine at Keele University said: “I am delighted that the outstanding track record in research and education that Prof Hanna has made to the Keele University School of Medicine has been recognised through his Honorary Professor title. I look forward to working more closely with him in the future.

"UHNM and Keele University have a strong track record in working together, training the next generation of health care professionals and generating the evidence needed to improve care for our patients. Partnerships are critical and honorary titles, such as Prof Hanna’s, help to consolidate and grow these relationships."
