UHNM pharmacist receives hero award

A member of the pharmacist team at University Hospital of North Midlands has been presented with a Hero Award for saving someone’s life whilst on holiday.

Sharon Sturland, Pharmacy Technician, was in Italy enjoying a day by the pool with her husband, son and daughter, when she noticed a man in distress, pulling a lady from the pool.  Sharon and her husband offered to help the man after realising he needed urgent assistance.

At this point, Sharon realised that the lady was not breathing and had no pulse. Sharon and her husband then performed CPR for around 20 minutes until the emergency services arrived.

Due to Sharon’s quick-thinking actions the patient survived and was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Tracy Bullock, Chief Executive said: “I am so proud to present Sharon with a Hero Award today. Her quick-thinking and care she provided to this person gave them a chance of survival. To know our staff are saving lives in another country whilst on holiday just shows the incredible care we provide.”
