Respiratory physiology team thanked by CEO

UHNM’s respiratory physiology team have been thanked for their contribution to the fight against Covid-19. During the first wave of the pandemic the team were redeployed to help with delivery of CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) to Covid patients. They also continued with urgent assessments to keep patients well and out of hospital.

Dr Helen Stone, consultant in respiratory medicine, said: “The team’s work is crucial to the delivery of respiratory medicine but also to a wide variety of other services such as surgery, especially cancer surgery, where they form a vital part of pre-operative assessment.

“In June 2020 the team began their restoration and recovery plan and they are now well ahead of other physiology departments across the region in terms of the number of patients and tests completed on a daily basis.”

The team have been given the Chief Executive’s Award in recognition of their work.

Ian Cliff, chief respiratory physiologist, has recently had his article entitled ‘Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on a respiratory physiology department and the patients’ perception of rapid service change’ accepted for publication in the  BMJ Leader Journal. Reviewers commented that other physiology departments could use this paper when redesigning and re-establishing services in their own departments.
