Mother thanks children’s nurse for support and compassion

The mother of a patient has thanked children's nurse Helen Yorke for her compassion. Sarah Luyt’s son Joseph, who has severe learning difficulties and epilepsy, has been cared for by Helen and the children’s team at Royal Stoke for a number of years. Having reached the age of 19, Helen has now helped to manage the transfer of Joseph’s care from paediatric to adult services.

Sarah said: “The care Helen has given my son has been second-to-none. She is so calm, efficient, professional and caring; always going above and beyond.

“Helen has navigated us from paediatric care into adult services with such thoughtfulness and compassion, nothing ever seems too much trouble for her. As a family caring for our son it means so much to have had Helen’s care and guidance through some very difficult time.”

Sarah has given Helen the UHNM Hero award in recognition of her exemplary care.

Helen said: “As a team we are doing our best to make special allowances which will enhance Joseph’s care and make it easier for him and his family to make the transfer.

“One measure we have taken is to ensure Joseph has a ‘hospital passport’, which contains information on his additional needs and ensures teams around the hospital can plan ahead and put the appropriate support in place.

“As a parent Sarah works so hard and it is really nice of her to take the time out and let me know how much she appreciates the little things I do. Our parents ultimately do all of the hard work and I just support best I can. It’s really lovely to be recognised in this way.”
