Mother thanks midwife for support and care

A mother who had to undergo an emergency c-section has thanked her midwife for the support and reassurance she gave. Jennifer Hughes, 32, came to the midwifery unit at Royal Stoke University Hospital to be induced, but upon delivery baby Rupert began to show signs of sepsis. Jennifer has now expressed her appreciation for midwife Meltia Bostock’s calmness and care during a stressful and frightening time.

Jennifer, who is also a nurse, said: “Melita was incredible and stayed by my side the whole time. I was separated from my husband as I went into surgery so from that point I felt very lost. I'm a nurse myself but in that moment I was not capable of understanding what was happening. Melita noticed how scared I was, explained everything and gave me the reassurance I needed that everything was going to be ok.

“Melita is everything a nurse or midwife should encompass, she is kind, caring, compassionate, understanding and so knowledgeable in her area. Melita is mine, Rupert’s and my partner’s hero and we are all so thankful to her. I will be sure to tell Rupert about the amazing staff at UHNM that helped him arrive safely.”

Sharon Wallis, Head of Midwifery at UHNM, presented Melita with the UHNM Hero award.

Melita said: “I was completely overwhelmed to be nominated for the award and even more so that I have been presented with it. Jennifer and her family were an absolute pleasure to care for and I am so pleased to be apart of their journey welcoming Rupert into their family. I cannot thank them enough for their kind words.
