UHNM Smart with your Heart project scoops HSJ Award

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust is delighted to announce that its project Smart with your Heart has been named as winner of the Driving Efficiency Through Technology at this year’s HSJ Awards, recognising their outstanding contribution to healthcare. Following an intensive judging process, UHNM, working in partnership with Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and three digital companies was handed the prestigious accolade on Wednesday.

UHNM’s heart failure team recruited patients to use digital services to help them understand and manage their own condition with confidence at home and help avoid a visit to A&E or a readmission to hospital.

Dr Dargoi Satchi, Project lead and Consultant Cardiologist at UHNM said: “We were absolutely delighted to have been shortlisted in three categories but to be named as the winners in the Driving Efficiency through Technology Award is the icing on the cake. It means a great deal to all those involved to be recognised in this way and we’re confident that the positive impact of this Award will help to create a long-lasting legacy to the benefit of our patients.”

Smart with your Heart was recognised for its ambition and demonstrable positive impact that it had on patient and staff experiences within the health and social care sector.

Digital services from Simple Shared Healthcare, Signum Health and Health2Works have enabled patients to be closely monitored from their own home, providing access to care in the community, should they need it, before they become acutely unwell, reducing the need to return to hospital.

Recap provides an online personal library, filled with information from the individual patient’s heart failure nurse and consultant to help them improve their own self-care.

The third digital service refers patients to trusted third sector or voluntary sector organisations to help provide social, emotional and psychological support.

More than 4,500 health and social care staff “tuned in” to the first virtual HSJ Awards evening on 17 March 2021 to celebrate the dedication, innovation, and teamwork within the health care community. Hosted by comedian, actor and charity campaigner, Sir Lenny Henry, alongside award-winning journalist and broadcaster, Victoria Derbyshire, the awards ceremony celebrated the diligent and selfless work of healthcare heroes over the past 12 months – a year which has been one of the most demanding on record for the NHS.

HSJ editor, Alistair McLellan, said: “We know that UHNM is not alone in fostering a culture of excellence and hope that this award win will be a source of inspiration for like-minded teams across the country.”
