New nurse thanked for support of international delegates

Newly qualified scrub nurse Riya Muthu-Kandathil has been thanked for helping to support UHNM’s upcoming delegation of international nurses. Riya, originally from Kerala, India, volunteered her own time to take part in videos which will help recruits prepare for their OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations). Riya started at UHNM as a nursing assistant and in less than five years has progressed to the role of scrub nurse in cardiothoracic theatres, all whilst working full time and caring for a family.

OSCEs form part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s registration process for nurses and midwives trained outside of the EU.

Stella Underwood, Clinical Placement Facilitator, said: “Riya has gone above and beyond to help our new overseas nurses. The video will be an invaluable resource for a large number of people in the future and we are so grateful that Riya volunteered her own time to help with the filming. Riya is hard working and a fantastic team member who lives the trust’s values.”

Riya has been given the Chief Executive’s Award in recognition of her contribution.

Tracy Bullock, Chief Executive, said: “Riya is a shining example of what hard work, a good attitude and determination can achieve and she is a real asset to the trust. We want to really thank Riya for doing such a great job in general and especially on the videos.”

Andrew Cole, Theatres Matron, said: “We’re extremely proud of Riya and the way she’s progressing. She’s giving a lot back to the trust and her personality really comes out in the training videos. She’s a credit to the theatres and we’re really pleased to have her working with us.”

Riya said: “I am really thankful to everyone at UHNM, they have given me lots of time and this has helped me to train and develop. I really enjoy my work in cardiothoracic theatres, they have given me really good support and I have two mentors who help me a lot. It was a real surprise to get the award. I didn’t expect it all but I’m really happy.”
