Dr Indira Natarajan, Consultant Stroke Physician, shared the team's experience about implementation of the ‘geko™’ device for the prevention of post-stroke venous thromboembolism

UHNM’s stroke team are amongst the first to contribute to a new learning platform designed to help share good practice across the NHS.BOB.Health’ is free to the NHS and offers users the chance to tap into a library of case studies which highlight other teams’ experiences in setting set up new practices.

Dr Indira Natarajan, Consultant Stroke Physician, said: “It can be difficult for the NHS to adopt new practices and adapt to new ways of working, but BOB.Health enables us to tap in to the knowledge of our colleagues elsewhere who have already undertaken similar projects. This can make all the difference in how efficiently a new practice or procedure can be set up. The quicker the better, because it ultimately means a faster result and better care for our patients.”

The stroke team shared their experience about implementation of the ‘geko™’ device for the prevention of post-stroke venous thromboembolism. The device works to increase blood flow in the deep veins of the calf and thereby reduce the risk of patients developing venous thromboembolism (VTE).

A study of 1,000 acute stroke patients found that no patients wearing the geko™ device developed VTE (Venous Thromboembolism), a condition in which a blood clot forms most often in the deep veins of the leg, groin or arm.

Sky Medical Technology, a UK-based medical devices company and manufacturer of the geko™ device, was crowned winner of the Innovation Award at the prestigious Medilink North of England Healthcare Business Awards 2020.
