Doctor thanks Nursing Associate in Children’s Outpatients for unconditional support

Rachel Cartlidge

A Nursing Associate in Children's Outpatients has been recognised for her spark, dedication and unconditional support. Rachel Cartlidge recently became the first in her area to progress to the role of Nursing Associate and has been given the Employee of the Month award for showing great initiative, integrity and diligence.

Dr Melissa Hibbard, Consultant Paediatrician, said: “Rachel became the first in her position to learn how to do skin prick procedures. She has also taken on independent support of the department’s allergy clinic, as well as many other key tasks within the clinic.

"Not only has Rachel taken on roles ably, she has frequently helped to teach medical and nursing students, which requires a whole new level of expertise and confidence. Colleagues are always complimentary about the clarity of her teaching and she really does support others, helping them to learn and grow and showing maturity beyond her years and experience. Rachel is always positive and helpful and has really developed in her role. We are so very proud of the way she embodies the tenacity and spirit which we value so strongly at UHNM.

“Rachel also has a lovely manner and is kind and considerate of patients and colleagues. She smiles a lot even when we are faced with difficulties and always approaches challenges calmly. Rachel is efficient and productive and never moans when clinics occasionally over-run unpredictably. I always feel supported by her unconditionally when our backs are against the wall. She is a quiet, unassuming, unsung hero and I feel blessed to have her on our team but also in this trust.”

Rachel started at UHNM as a healthcare assistant, but was inspired to enroll on a nursing associate apprenticeship. The position of Nursing Associate bridges the gap between a Nursing Assistant and a Staff Nurse and means a person is able to act more independently.

Ro Vaughan, Director of Human Resources, said: “Rachel has achieved so much for her team in general and to become one of the first nursing associates is particularly special. It’s clear that her excellent work ethic and reliability mean a lot to her team.”

Rachel said: “I feel so overwhelmed to get this award, but I’m really proud of myself too. I feel like I’ve worked really hard to get where I am and I always try to go above and beyond for the team.”
