Royal Stoke University Hospital

Royal Stoke University Hospital was rebuilt in 2012 as part of a £400m initiative to bring all hospital services in Stoke-on-Trent onto one large campus site. Royal Stoke is a great place to work, learn and research. The hospital campus holds 80% of the Trust’s services, including the Major Trauma Centre and Emergency Centre. Royal Stoke receives major trauma patients from as far afield as Anglesey in North Wales and in total serves more than three million people. The A&E sees close to 150,000 people a year, making it one of the busiest departments in the country.

Many of UHNMs 450 consultants are based at Royal Stoke, and the main specialist services for the region are located here. These services include the major specialties of Cardiovascular, Neurosciences, Metabolic/GI, Women’s & Children’s, Musclo-Skeletal Services/Trauma and Oncology. To deliver all these services and the many others we provide the Trust has created major departments to deliver the patient care.

These include:

  • 27 Theatres department
  • 60 Critical Care beds across six pods
  • 84 bed Maternity Centre and a 26 bed NICU
  • 62 bed Children’s Centre
  • Cancer Centre with two wards and chemotherapy and radiotherapy facilities
  • A further 1,000 beds across 40 wards, with 50% single bed rooms
  • 56 room Outpatient Department

Royal Stoke really is a hospital for everyone. But to ensure it is a great place to work, there are lots of facilities for all staff. The hospital has a bright and airy Atrium with a Costa Coffee and WHSmith, and a full restaurant on the mezzanine. In addition a bespoke fruit and vegetable stall is located at the entrance, run by a local company.

Elsewhere there are numerous small Costa Coffee outlets across the site and a Subway selling fresh sandwiches.

There are nearly 3,000 staff parking spaces on car parks surrounding the Royal Stoke. The further spaces away (an 800m walk) even have a bespoke shuttle bus service if you don’t want to walk or it’s not a beautiful North Midlands day. For those wishing to cycle to work, secure bicycle storage is available as well as shower and changing facilities. A gym is located nearby offering a discount for UHNM staff, and child crèche facilities are also available.

Royal Stoke is truly one of the best places to work in the NHS.
