As a member of the community paediatric team, I assess and manage children with developmental delay and neuro-developmental conditions. The bulk of my work, however, relates to children looked after by the local authority and adopted children. Our team provides a holistic assessment of the health of children in care, manages the health problems identified by this and provides appropriate advice to the local authority about the children. We also advise local authority fostering and adoption teams about the impact of any health or lifestyles issues prospective foster and adoptive carers have on their ability to parent.

As a full member of the Stoke Adoption Panel, I provide medical advice about both children to be adopted and their prospective parents and wider health issues related to the process. I am vice chair of the national health group of the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), which provides a lead to health staff working in this field and advice regarding relevant issues to national government. I am chair of BAAF health group in the north west region too.
