University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust was created in November 2014 following the integration of Stafford Hospital with the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, signalling a time of major, positive change in health services for the people of Staffordshire.
Never before have two such significant trusts come together to form one organisation and with investment of more than £250m the single new NHS Trust in the North Midlands will see local hospital services and facilities transformed, providing an opportunity for a bright and stable future.
Serving around three million people across Staffordshire and North Wales, UHNM is one of the largest hospital trusts in the country. Its 10,000 strong workforce provides the full range of emergency treatment, planned operations and medical care from our two hospitals in Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent.
The Trust also provides specialised services for three million people in a wider area, including neighbouring counties and North Wales. Our specialised services include cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, renal and dialysis services, neonatal intensive care, paediatric intensive care, trauma, respiratory conditions, spinal surgery, upper gastro-intestinal surgery, complex orthopaedic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and the management of liver conditions.
Royal Stoke University Hospital, one of our two sites, is a large acute teaching hospital on the border of Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire. Our other site is County Hospital in Stafford. We are one of the largest Trusts and have one of the busiest emergency departments in the country. We have good transport links, being close to the M6 and A50, and lie centrally between Manchester to the North and Birmingham to the South. The Trust’s hospitals have more than 1,400 inpatient beds.
In 2014 Keele University Medical School was ranked second of 32 medical schools in the National Student Survey, reflecting very high levels of satisfaction from students. The Keele curriculum is an innovative, modern medical curriculum that includes problem based learning whilst still using traditional methods of teaching. The distinctiveness of the course is that it has been designed to allow diversity and integration. It allows students with different personalities, aspirations, preferences, learning styles, strengths and weaknesses to be successful, to enjoy their undergraduate time and to be able to build on these experiences.
For Foundation Year Trainees, the course helps students to experience more specialised activity by recognising and developing natural aptitudes. Our students can start to devise a ‘pathway’ that concentrates on research, community practice, a particular specialty, or on breadth and general experience.
The school has recently obtained an award from INSPIRE, a scheme devised by the Academy of Medical Sciences, with the aim of fostering a research culture in all clinicians entering the NHS.
Together with Skills Academy, they developed MedPath, a medical student volunteer programme. Medical students are trained by our staff to deliver enrichment activities as part of the widening participation programme. In total 121 students graduated from Keele University in July 2014, and a third of these came to work at the Trust as Foundation Doctors in August 2014.
Clinical teaching is a high priority within the Trust. During the 2013/14 academic year 56% of the Trust’s consultants were involved in teaching and developing the curriculum.
The Research and Development Team is committed to bringing the best patient care to the people of Staffordshire through new drugs and treatments by using innovative research and fostering creative ideas.
University Hospitals of North Midlands is a ‘research active’ organisation, which means we actively seek and support the development and delivery of potentially the best innovative new treatments for our patients.
Our researchers are internationally renowned and take part in global research to help a whole range of medical conditions. Through our collaboration with Keele University, leading professors and research scientists are now working alongside our clinicians to deliver ground-breaking research that can help patients not just in Staffordshire, but all over the world.
Within their specialist labs on the Trust’s site, Keele researchers are devising new drugs and new treatments at a laboratory bench that doctors and nurses are then delivering directly to patients’ bedsides.
This means we have home-grown treatments which have been developed in the Trust’s site now being trialled directly with our patients in areas such as Cancer, Stroke and Diabetes.
Successful partnerships with Keele University and Staffordshire University allow leading professors and research scientists to work alongside our clinicians as part of the Trust’s commitment to becoming a leading centre of excellence for research.
A major recruitment issue for Research and Development is that we are looking for experienced and qualified nurses who have experience of research, or who wish to develop a career in research. Our dedicated teams of research nurses support the Directorates across the Trust in delivering trials and play a vital role in the recruitment of patients. We get a lot of adverts from newly qualified nurses or those still in training when we advertise research nurse roles.

The 2014 NHS Annual Staff Survey showed that our staff are able to contribute to improvements at work, feel they make a difference to patients and are satisfied with the quality of patient care they are able to deliver. Staff at Royal Stoke University Hospital are also amongst the top 20% of acute trusts nationally who feel secure raising concerns about unsafe clinical practice.
As the Trust is undergoing a period of significant change, staff are engaging with what is going on in the hospital and the Trust is working towards a culture where staff feel they can express any concerns and where staff can highlight any improvements they feel will ultimately benefit patients. Currently 77% of staff say they feel safe raising concerns and 74% say they can contribute toward improvements.
The Trust won a Healthy Workplace Award after improving the wellbeing of staff.
Public Health Staffordshire presented the Trust with the Silver level Workplace Health and Wellbeing Award.
The Trust has been working in partnership with Staffordshire County Council, who developed the Workplace Health Programme. This programme helps small and large employers in Staffordshire to look after the health and wellbeing of their workforce and minimise the impacts of poor health on their organisations. The Award follows a unique programme of Health and Wellbeing initiatives for staff, which has been put together by the Trust’s Health and Wellbeing team. Over the last three years the team have provided a host of health and wellbeing events, services and opportunities to staff, as well as looking at the overall organisational approach to wellbeing and managing sickness absence in a positive manner.
