Colposcopy

The colposcopy unit is one of the largest and most efficient units in the West Midlands and currently receives about 2,000 new abnormal smear referrals per year. The service is delivered from 5.5 colposcopy and two hospital smear clinics per week that are staffed by three consultants and four nurse colposcopists.

Urogynaecology

Specialist consultant and nurse lead service for the investigation and treatment of female continence problems. The team work closely with specialist physiotherapists in the hospital and the community, and colorectal and urology colleagues.

Ambulatory Gynaecology

This is a new service developed following the appointment of a new Consultant in 2009. This service supports the Trusts objective of reducing length of stay and has converted traditionally inpatient and Day case general Anaesthetic procedures into ambulatory cases under LA. The refurbishment of CTS will enable further transfer to ambulatory as an additional list will be available to Gynaecology

Menstrual Disorders

A comprehensive service is provided by a team of consultants and ANPs. This ranges from in-patient and outpatient investigation, vaginal ultrasound scanning, medical and surgical management of heavy menstrual bleeding. Treatment covers those methods which are not available in the community including hormonal and non-hormonal therapy, mirena intrauterine system, endometrial ablation and open and laparoscopic hysterectomy. This service often requires referral between gynaecologists with differing expertise.

Gynaecological Endocrinology, PMS and Menopause

There is a well-established clinic for the management of complex patients

Paediatric Gynaecology

We offer an outpatient general gynaecology service for children under the age of 16 with input from a consultant paediatrician.

Gynaecological Oncology

UHNM is a Cancer Centre within the North West Midlands Cancer Network which comprises two cancer centres at UHNM and Wolverhampton with linkage to cancer units in County Hospital and Shrewsbury. It serves a population of about 2.5 million.

The centre receives around 1,200 cancer-pathway referrals a year and manages approximately 200 gynaecological cancers. There are currently three consultants who provide a specialist service for gynaecological cancers providing outpatient, diagnostic and operative treatment. The consultants work predominately on a team basis with generic referrals and clinical cross cover to maximise clinical effectiveness.

The consultants form part of the Cancer Centre MDT which also includes clinical oncology, radiology and pathology colleagues. The hospital has recently opened a new purpose-build cancer Unit.

At present there is a weekly Rapid access PMB clinic, which is supported by an ambulant gynaecological facility, and the equivalent of two gynaecological oncology clinics. The team are supported by two clinical nurse specialist who provide advice, counselling and support to women throughout their treatment. There are 2.5 extended all day operating lists.
