A member of the hospital's estates and facilities team is helping to improve patient experience at UHNM. Alex Smith works as a capital projects estates manager at Royal Stoke University Hospital and has been instrumental in delivering a significant number of arts schemes. He even uses his own time and energy to collaborate with local communities, artists and arts organisations to look at ways that arts can be delivered.

Lorraine Whitehead, Director of Estates, Facilities and PFI, said: "The artwork helps to create positive first impressions for patients, staff and visitors and can also help to enhance patient wellbeing and recovery. Alex works within the constraints of a very limited budget, ensuring every penny is spent wisely. His most recent achievement is the delivery of sculptures by a local artist which depict the history of Stoke-on-Trent and were very well received. Alex is a true role model, exhibiting the Trust's values and behaviours in all that he does."

Alex also led a Staffordshire University 'Arts Challenge Day' where students were invited to come up with ideas as to how they can work with UHNM to deliver further arts schemes. He has been given the Employee of the Month award in recognition of his outstanding work.

Alex said: "Five years ago I left private sector architectural practice to work directly for UHNM. This was in the hope that I could make a greater positive contribution to the development of my hospital. Receiving this award reassures me further that I made the right decision, which means a lot to me and I am very grateful and happy to receive it."
