UHNM's Immunology and Allergy team have achieved the Improving Quality in Allergy Services (IQAS) accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians. The team were awarded the accreditation in February 2019 and are one of only three organisations in the UK that have an IQAS accredited service.
Improving Quality in Allergy Services (IQAS) is the accreditation scheme for adult allergy services in the UK. Services undergo a programme of quality improvement before receiving a rigorous assessment against the IQAS standards. Services which are shown to meet the standards are granted accreditation.
Consultant Immunologist Dr Sarah Goddard said: "The service started in 2010 and prior to that there was no allergy service in Stoke-on-Trent, allergies are becoming more and more common than it used to be so the service has gradually built up and we now see nearly 1,000 patients from across Staffordshire, Shropshire, Cheshire and the West Midlands.
Less than 12 months ago the team also became one of only 10 nationwide to achieve the Quality in Primary Immunology Deficiency Services (QPIDS) accreditation.
Sarah added: "Our service is one of relatively few specialist allergy services in the country able to deliver a complete range of diagnostic and treatment such as immunotherapy for bee and wasp venom. To be only the third allergy service in the country to achieve this is amazing and really shows the hard work and teamwork from the team and to the wider trust management and support services."
