A ward at Royal Stoke has been drawing praise and compliments from both patients and staff for the exemplary standard of care and compassion being given. Past patients and relatives have been writing in to thank staff on Ward 233, which cares for people with respiratory conditions. The 32-bed ward is managed by Senior Sister Tracy Mellor and has received award nominations and a host of positive feedback on the Trust's Facebook page.
The ward have now been given the UHNM Hero award, which recognises the special role staff perform in care giving and promotes excellence and dedication.
Tracy Mellor, Senior Sister, said: "I have always encouraged the staff to treat each patient as if they were a member of their own family and I think the excellent standard of care we give is down to sticking to this rule. We work closely together as a team and senior staff are approachable. This means that we have a great working relationship with our staff, which reflects in the care we are able to offer to our patients and enables us to really go above and beyond."
Staff received a particularly touching letter from the son of a patient recently. Mr Mark Ainsworth wrote to say thank you for the care and compassion given to his father Neil Ainsworth after he was admitted following a fall last winter.
Mr Ainsworth said: "I would like to thank Lynn Walker, who overnight ensured we had everything we needed and went the extra mile to make us comfortable as we stayed throughout the night. She was forever attentive without being imposing and very kind when helping us stay the night. Lynn always put dad and his family at the centre of her thoughts.
"The fact that we could celebrate dads' birthday with him while toasting with a whisky meant a great deal. It even got a lip smack of approval from dad when we thought he had long lost consciousness. This story raised a few knowing smiles at his funeral! We were holding his hand when he passed away with the sound of "Happy Birthday" ringing in his ears. I am deeply impressed and humbled by the quality of the staff on ward 233."
