Critical Care nurse Laura Lawton has been commended for helping a young patient following the loss of his mother due to a traumatic brain injury. In an emotional and time-pressured situation, Laura quickly worked with the patient's son to help him understand what had happened and even gathered together a memory box to help him remember his mum.

Michelle Martin, Senior Staff Nurse, said: "Laura showed great strength and compassion, quickly building a bond of trust. The work that she did not only helped the little boy, but also the rest of his family. Although Laura found this very difficult, she put her own feelings and discomfort aside to make the terrible circumstances a little easier."

Eddie O'Grady, Assistant Director of Human Resources and Head of Organisational Development said: "The work Laura did to help this little boy and his family in a very difficult set of circumstances is fantastic and she really showed great compassion, which is one of our core values as a Trust. Laura represents what we want our nursing staff to deliver on a daily basis."

Laura has been given the Employee of the Month award in recognition of her outstanding care and compassion.

She said: "We all work so hard to make a difference and it's an amazing feeling to get recognised."
