UHNM has introduced a single-system record for all radiology imaging across both of its hospitals. The trust has now changed from using three separate systems to a single modern one and the project to install the new programme is the biggest system change in Radiology for 10 years. The PACS (Photo Archiving and Communication System) team have been working tirelessly to replace all three systems, working long hours over a three-week period in order to achieve a smooth launch.
Phil Williams, Divisional IM&T Lead, said: "This project was a long time in planning and finally came to fruition in April 2018. Since the creation of UHNM in 2014, we have been using three distinct PACS systems across our hospitals and services. This has given us many challenges and issues, especially when patients are transferred between our hospitals. Services such as Breast Care have had to cope with navigating critical patient images across three separate systems.
The project implementation was phased across three 'go-live' weekends in March and April in order to minimise impact on clinical services. The team carried out this work on top of their 'business as usual' activity, which did not let up.
Phil said: "The team were always flexible and accommodating in meeting the needs of the project and service, often at short notice. During this time, they were always professional and dedicated in providing a top-quality service to the imaging directorate and our hospitals. The result is that we now have a single-system record for all radiology imaging across our hospitals. This is already helping services with patient pathways. All three go-lives went smoothly, to plan and were achieved with no downtime and minimal disruption to services. This is a testament to the commitment of the PACS team."
Staff have been given the Team of the Month award in acknowledgment of the thorough and efficient service they have provided across both County Hospital and Royal Stoke.
