Employee of the Month winners

At UHNM, we love to acknowledge and thank our staff when they go above and beyond their call of duty. A big part of how we do this is are our Employee and Team of the Month awards, which recognise many of the qualities that make our UHNM family what it is. Unfortunately, we had to put the awards on hold for a little while this year, due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Now they're back and we are thrilled to announce the winners for January - June 2020. Each one of these staff members have demonstrated extraordinary dedication, compassion and commitment.

January

Katherine Downes – Advanced Nurse Practitioner, County Hospital

In January, Katherine helped a young patient who had been transferred to a palliative bed at County Hospital and was showing very distressing symptoms. She quickly initiated a treatment plan and the following day the patient was discharged home, thanks to her prompt and skillful intervention.

Dr Claire Hookey, Consultant in Palliative Care, nominated Katherine.

Dr Hookey said: “I have been hugely impressed by Katherine’s enthusiasm to learn, her motivation to provide excellent care and the speed with which she has become a highly competent palliative care professional, in addition to her established skills and knowledge in respiratory and general medicine.”

February

Julie Williams (pictured centre) – Senior Sister, Ward 8, County Hospital

Senior Sister Julie Williams supported her team through the merger of the day ward and the bariatric unit at County Hospital back in February.

Sister Bridget Gowodo, who nominated Julie, said: “Julie strives to achieve the highest standards whilst maintaining staff morale and she always encourages her staff to be the best that they can be, assisting them with opportunities for progression and learning on the ward. Julie is a great asset to the UHNM family and a strong, determined leader who always keeps her focus on the patient."

March

Craig Orchard – Admin Support Officer, Histology, Royal Stoke

Craig recently created a new system for completing reports which saves time and has resulted in a more robust working process within the Histology team.

Isabelle Noden, Admin Team Leader, nominated Craig.

Isabelle said: “Craig has trained up many of our new starters and covers duties which are not within his job description whenever asked. He has also come up with numerous ways to improve the way jobs are done throughout the office. He does all of this without being asked to and uses great initiative on a daily basis. Craig is a fantastic, helpful and polite staff member and an asset to our team."

April

Jacqui Barrs, Nursing Assistant, Ward 15, County Hospital

Jacqui is known for being enormously kind, generous and compassionate. Whether its buying treats for her patients or presents for her colleagues, she goes above and beyond to make people feel appreciated.

Ian Turner, ward receptionist, nominated Jacqui.

Ian said: “Jacqui really puts herself out for every patient she takes care of, buying them sweets, newspapers, and even clothing when they come in with nothing - and all from her own pocket. She never wants anything in return, she just loves giving. She gives 100% and is there for people whatever they need, whether it’s a bit of support or a listening ear. Jacqui is a strong advocate for her patients and is just willing to anything for anyone, whether it’s patients or staff.”

May

Tamsin Fletcher-Salt, Clinical Nurse Specialist for Diabetes, Royal Stoke

During the Coronavirus pandemic Tamsin moved off-site to work exclusively at Shelton Primary Care Centre. In addition to providing advice and support to patients and running virtual nurse-led clinics, she has also set up a "hospify" support group to help the team stay connected and a facebook page for patients.

Julie Wilkins, Diabetes Specialist Nurse, nominated Tamsin.

Julie said: “Tamsin has been instrumental in arranging video and virtual assistance in the form of clinics. She has also been part of a wider national group of experts, posting online support for both patients and healthcare professionals.  Tamsin has really gone above and beyond to embrace the challenges of the pandemic in a positive way, using available technology and social media.”

June

Stephanie Hobson, Senior Dental Nurse, Oral and Maxillofacial, Royal Stoke

Stephanie has made a valid contribution to patient and staff wellbeing during the Coronavirus outbreak. She set up a nurse triage station as a front-of-house service in the department and developed a triage system and operating procedure for use throughput the pandemic.

Donna Charlesworth, who nominated Stephanie, said: “Steph set up a one- way system in and out of the department for patients, temperature checks for staff and patients, a protocol for use of hand sanitiser pre and post-examination and an explanation of what patients should expect during their visit to the department, including a video presentation. She has been a very proactive, vigilant and conscientious member of the team.”
