A doctor at the forefront of the fight against Coronavirus has been given the Chief Executive’s Award.  Dr Adam Farmer, Consultant Gastroenterologist and acting Director of Research and Innovation at UHNM, volunteered to lead the first COVID-19 ward at County Hospital. He has launched numerous initiatives, including virtual visiting to allow patients and their families to communicate, a daily telephone call to patients' next of kin to provide a clinical update, handwritten cards to patients’ families, and enhanced training for ward staff.

Dr Farmer also personally organised for a significant number of patients to join the national Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 therapy (RECOVERY) trial and, despite his workload, even found time to raise over £850 for UHNM Charity.

Tracy Bullock, Chief Executive, said: “I particularly want to thank Dr Farmer for the care and compassion he has shown to his patients and their families, going to extreme lengths to make sure they are kept up-to-date.  This is a critical aspect of patient and family wellbeing, especially during the restricted visiting due to COVID-19.  Staff noted Dr Farmer would stay late and always worked over and above expected hours and days to ensure all patient needs were looked after.   He has also provided excellent senior clinical leadership to doctors and nurses, and this has helped to increase their confidence and capabilities and junior doctors have reported to me how he has helped to create a happy and cohesive ward.”

Dr Farmer has received award nominations and commendations from staff round the trust for his compassionate approach to care and the support he has given to colleagues.

Dr Farmer said: “I am absolutely thrilled to receive this award and I would like to dedicate this to my colleagues and patients on Ward 14 at County Hospital. They have truly provided first-class care throughout the pandemic.”
